HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston missed some opportunities to put Utah Valley away and came up short in a 57-54 loss at Johnson Coliseum on Saturday.
The Bearkats (14-11 overall, 9-3 WAC) led for 39 minutes until the Wolverines (15-6, 6-3) took the lead at 55-54 with 58 seconds left. Sam Houston missed two 3-point attempts including one at the buzzer.
Savion Flagg led the Kats with 12 points, and
Jaden Ray and
Kuba Karwowski each scored eight.
Jarren Cook and
Javion May chipped in seven points each.
Sam Houston shot just 35 percent from the field and was 4 for 20, or 20 percent, from behind the arc.
The Bearkats put together a solid first half, leading from start to finish as May opened the game with a 3-pointer and a layup.
The teams traded baskets until Sam Houston was able to put some distance between it and Utah Valley. Karwowski made a free throw and
Javon Grant hit a 3 to make it 18-10 midway through the half.
Flagg sparked a 6-0 run to put the Bearkats up 10 with a layup that was followed by a dunk and a layup but Karwowski. The Wolverines cut the lead to six, but
Jaden Ray hit a floater in the paint in the closing seconds to send Sam Houston into the break on top 30-22.
