DENVER, Colo. - After a record setting performance on Tuesday, Jennifer Herbst has been named the WAC golfer of the week.
Herbst took third place at the Texas State Invitational, shooting a school-record round of 65 on Tuesday. It was a near flawless round, going bogey free with seven birdies on the day. Her best stretch was on the back-9 with four birdies in a five-hole span.
For the tournament, she finished 1-under, four shots off the lead, and was one of only three golfers who were under par over the three rounds of play.
She did some of her best work on the par 3's, leading the field with an even par score. She was also even on the par 5's and finished in the top five in the field in scoring on the par 4's at 1-under.
The previous record of 66 had been done four times in program history, including once already this season by Herbst. Gianti Mahardhika was the first to set the record in 2016. Hanna Alberto also shot a 66 at the Texas State Invitational last season and Zulaikah Nasser shot a 66 earlier this season at the USA Intercollegiate, the same event Herbst shot her 66.
This is the second WAC Golfer of the Week award for Herbst, having been previously recognized in September after a second-place finish at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational. It's the fourth weekly award for the Bearkat women's program with Nasser also claiming the award twice this season.
The Bearkats will return to action on March 7 when they head to Jacksonville, Florida for the UNF Intercollegiate.
