Kats tee off in inaugural Betsy Rawls Invitational appearance

AUSTIN – The Sam Houston Bearkats women's golf team heads north to compete in the Betsy Rawls Invitational hosted by University of Texas beginning March 15 at the University of Texas Golf Club.
The two-day tournament will feature 54 holes of competition, with 36 holes scheduled for Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
The par-72 course measures 6,473 yards and features a strategic layout with well-placed hazards and stunning views of the Texas Hill Country. The course was designed by renowned architects Bechtol-Russell. Play will take place from the Burnt Orange Steerhead tee markers with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. for round one and 1:30 p.m. for round two.
The field includes the most ranked competitors the Bearkats have faced this season with No. 7 Texas as the host, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 31 Oklahoma, No. 33 LSU, No. 42 TCU, and No. 47 Oregon State. Other competitors include Boise State, BYU, Chattanooga, Harvard, HCU, Incarnate Word, Troy, and UTSA.
This will be the first time the Bearkats have competed in the tournament.
Sam Houston enters the event following a week break after finishing 10th in the UNF Collegiate at +67 overall, finishing ahead of Campbell, Old Dominion, Eastern Kentucky, and Jacksonville. The Bearkats finished two strokes behind host North Florida, one stroke behind Furman, and eight strokes behind Miami.
Francesca Sumcad led the Bearkats with rounds of 75-77-75, recording three birdies in the opening round and two in round two before finishing strong with birdies on holes one and 14 in the final round. She placed 15th overall at 11-over-par.
