AUSTIN — Christine Billmeier turned in a solid pitching performance in the circle, but the Sam Houston softball team couldn't muster any offense in a 2-0 loss to Texas on Wednesday night.
The best scoring opportunity for the Bearkats (5-10) came in the seventh inning when
Hannah Scheaffer hit a leadoff single and her pinch runner
Caitlyn Goodeaux stole second base.
Brailey Wasik drew a two-out walk, but
Elia Hebel hit a sharp groundball right to first base to end it.
Billmeier (1-2) took the loss despite only allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. She recorded her first three strikeouts of the season.
Texas scored in the first inning on a double and a triple to take the early lead.
Sam Houston had batters reach in the first three innings.
Brodie Quinlan drew a walk in the first, Wasik singled in the second and
Sheridan Fisher was hit by a pitch in the third but all three were left stranded at first base.
The Kats were able to work out of a jam in the fourth inning. The Longhorns had a runner reach third on an error to begin the inning and a bunt single eventually led to runners on second and third.
Billmeier ended the threat by forcing a shallow fly ball to center field and a groundout on a great defensive play by shortstop
Emily Telg.
Texas was able to add an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run.
The Bearkats open WAC play this weekend when they host Lamar in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m.
