HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats stepped on the gas in the closing minutes to put away Tarleton 69-50 at Johnson Coliseum on Thursday.
Sam Houston finished the regular season with a 13-5 record in the WAC and clinched a top five seed in the conference tournament which will take place in Las Vegas March 9-12. Savion Flagg led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Tristan Ikpe and Demarkus Lampley each scored 11 and Donte Powers and Javion May each chipped in 10.
The Texans (14-16 overall, 9-8 WAC) wouldn't go away every time it appeared the Kats (18-13) were going to pull away.
Sam Houston opened the second half with a 6-0 run on a three-point play by May and a 3-pointer by Flagg to go up 35-24. Tarleton got it back down to a two-point lead and the Kats responded once again on a 3 by May, a layup by Jaden Ray and dunk by Flagg to make it 52-43.
Sam Houston finally got the big boost it needed to close it out when Powers, Ray, Lampley and Flagg hit four straight shots from behind the arc to end the game.
The first half was similar. The Bearkats couldn't create any separation from the Texans
Sam Houston led by eight, eight minutes into the game thanks to a 6-0 run. Ikpe got it started with a layup, and Flagg scored the other four on a pair of free throws and a highlight reel dunk at the 12:00 mark.
Tarleton cut it to two, but another 6-0 on baskets by Ray, Lampley and May made it 19-11.
The Bearkats led by as many as nine points with just under three minutes to go when Flagg buried a 3-pointer from the right side, but a 6-2 run by the Texans including a pair of 3s made it 29-24 at the half.
