HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats could not get going offensively on Wednesday, dropping its second consecutive midweek contest, 2-0, to UTSA at Don Sanders Stadium.
Four Bearkats (19-15) combined to strike out seven UTSA (22-11) hitters, but the Roadrunner arms were even more effective, holding the Kats to just a pair of singles in the game.
Matt Rudis threw well in the start, allowing just one run on three hits in 4.0 innings, while
Braden Davis struck out four of the eight batters he faced in 2.0 innings of his own. The Kats also got a scoreless relief inning from
Steven Beard, and 2.0 scoreless innings from
Lance Lusk.
Ryan Beaird got the win as the most effective UTSA arm of the night, striking out five hitters in 3.1 no-hit innings before handing it off to Daniel Shafer who picked up his fifth save of the year.
UTSA got the early lead on an RBI double by Sammy Diaz in the fourth and two innings later added an insurance run on an RBI single by Ryan Flores.
The Kats will now take the weekend off before a big week of road games, beginning Monday at McNeese and followed by a game Tuesday at Baylor. Sam Houston will then return to WAC play for a 3-game set at Tarleton beginning next Friday in Stephenville.
