Golfers 2nd after Day 1 at WAC Championship

KERRVILLE – The women's golf team opened the WAC Championships with a team score of 301 and are tied for second after the first day of action at Riverhill Country Club.

The Kats are 13-over and five shots back of New Mexico State after the opening 18 holes of play. The championship consists of 18 holes on Tuesday and the final round on Wednesday.

Zulaikah Nasser leads the way for the Bearkats, shooting an even par round. She currently in fourth place, one shot back of the leaders. Back-to-back birdies at 9 and 10 got her back to even par for the day. After a bogey on 12, she got it right back on 14 with a birdie and then four pars closed out her round of 72.

Anna Takahashi is 10^th overall after shooting a 75 on Monday. She started her day with 9 straight pars, before playing the back nine at 3-over. She is just four shots back of the leaders.

Two shots back of Takahashi is Jennifer Herbst and Leah Alberto who both shot 5-over. They are both tied for 13^th. Viera Permata Rosada is tied for 29^th after shooting a 79.

The Bearkats entered the championship as the favorites to win as voted on by the coaches.
