Basson, Damera earn All-WAC honors

DENVER — Sam Houston freshman Megan Basson has been named the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis Freshman of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday.

In addition, Basson was voted by the conference coaches to the All-WAC first team, and sophomore Sunskrithi Damera was tabbed to the second team.

Basson, who is from Johannesburg, South Africa, made quite the impression during her rookie season with the Bearkats. She went 8-7 overall and was 4-1 in WAC play while playing in No. 1 singles.

Damera built of her stellar freshman season in 2021. The Hyderabad, India native went 11-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action while playing No. 4, 5 and 6 singles for Sam Houston.

The Bearkats earned the sixth seed in the WAC Tournament and will face Stephen F. Austin in the quarterfinals on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
