ABILENE — The Sam Houston softball team hit five home runs but it wasn't enough to fend off a doubleheader sweep by Abilene Christian in a Western Athletic Conference matchup on Friday.
The Bearkats lost game one 5-3 and dropped the nightcap 12-7 to fall to 11-35 overall and 4-13 in WAC play.
Sam Houston fell behind 2-0 in game one but were able to get a run back in the second inning when
Brailey Wasik hit a no-doubt solo home run to center field.
The Wildcats scored again in the fourth to go back up 3-1.
The Bearkats weren't about to go quietly and rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning.
Haleigh Carter led off the frame with a double to left center and moved over to third on a single through the right side by
Elia Hebel. Carter was able to score on a groundout by
Kylie Hobbs.
After Wasik walked,
Hannah Scheaffer tied the game with a single up the middle, but ACU hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
Game two was similar with Sam Houston down 4-0 after the first inning.
Starting pitcher
Regan Dunn helped her own cause with an RBI single in the second only to see the Wildcats make it 7-1 with three runs in the third.
Once again, the Kats came storming back to pull within 7-4 thanks to another solo home run by Wasik and a two-run blast by Hobbs.
Emily Telg ripped a two-run home run in the sixth, and
Kyndal Kutac hit a solo shot in the seventh, but the Wildcats put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The series finale is Saturday at noon.
