HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team fought until the end but could not overcome a five-run ninth inning to fall to Tarleton 15-10 in extra innings Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (10-31 overall, 4-11 WAC) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but got a run back in the second.
Kylie Hobbs led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field.
The Texans scored three in the top of the third, but Sam Houston answered.
Haleigh Carter reached on a throwing error with two outs, and
Elia Hebel hit a single to left field. Hobbs brought in a run with an RBI single and
Kyndal Kutac walked to set up a grand slam by
Brailey Wasik to put the Kats on top 6-5.
Tarleton retook the lead at 7-6 in the fourth and again Sam Houston came storming back.
Kelsey Bunch hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Emily Telg and
Sheridan Fisher both drew walks, and Carter hit an infield single to load the bases.
Hebel also walked to bring in a run, and Hobbs hit a two-run single to left field to make it 10-7.
The Texans tied it with three runs in the sixth to send it to extra innings and pulled away for the victory with five runs in the ninth thanks to a grand slam.
The Bearkats return to action with a doubleheader Wednesday at Houston Baptist.
