SUGAR LAND – The Sam Houston Bearkats could not get the bats going on Tuesday night, dropping a 9-1 decision to Houston at Constellation Field in the finale of the annual Don Sanders Cup series.
The Kats (27-20) trailed just 1-0 through three innings before Houston (33-16) put up four runs each in both the fourth and sixth innings. Sam Houston's lone run of the night came on an RBI triple from
Easton Loyd in the sixth that cut the lead to 5-1 at the time.
Sam Houston had just seven hits in the game with
Lane Brewster producing the lone multi-hit effort with a pair of singles. On the mound,
Gavi Coldiron got the start and was strong through three frames before the Cougars got to him three more times in the fourth inning, handing him his fourth loss of the year.
On the other side, Houston used seven pitchers of their own, starting with freshman Malachi Lott; however, it was Logan Clayton who moved to 4-3 with the win as he tossed 1.2 frames of 1-hit relief.
Three Cougars finished with two hits apiece as part of their 12-hit attack with Ryan Hernandez and Ian McMillan both hitting home runs.
The Kats, who own a 3-game lead in the WAC Southwest Division, will now return to league play with a weekend series beginning Friday at UTRGV.
