Contreras named to Golden Spikes list

For the second straight season, the Bearkats have a player recognized as one of the tops in the country. Tuesday, junior outfielder was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.

Contreras joins Colton Cowser, who was selected as a semifinalist last season, as the only two Sam Houston players to be named to the list.

Contreras, a junior outfielder from El Paso, led the WAC with a .447 batting average in league play and helped the Bearkats win the Southwest Division. Also boasting WAC-bests in on base percentage (.520) and slugging percentage (.854), he was also the league leader in hits (55), RBIs (61) and triples (4).

For the season he leads the NCAA in runs batted in with 89 and is fourth in the country in hits with 90 and 8^th in batting average (.404).

He's tops on the club in homers, average, hits, RBI and OPS. He also leads the team in doubles and triples and is third on the club in runs scored.

In his first season with the Bearkats, Contreras has already started rewriting the record book. He broke the school record for RBIs in a game with 9 earlier this season against SFA. He also continues to move up the list for hits, home runs and RBIs in a season.

He joins 30 other players across the country who are recognized as semifinalists for the top award in college baseball.

Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

Beginning with the announcement of the semifinalists, a ballot will be sent to a voting body consisting of baseball media members, select professional baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff, and the previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 150 voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. On June 8, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2022. Beginning with the semifinalist announcement and continuing through the finalist round voting deadline, fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
