Sewell named WAC Player of the Year

The Sam Houston Bearkats placed a league high five golfers on the WAC All-Conference team lead by Player of the Year Chad Sewell and Freshman of the Year Gene Chaikangwal.

Sewell and Chaikangwal are joined on the All-WAC first team by another freshman Bret Gray. Second Team selections go to Grayson Blunt as well as a third freshman Josh German.

"To have five players make all conference shows just how truly deep our squad is," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "I can't say enough about the job Chad did this season coming in as a senior transfer and leading the team like he did. Also, having three freshmen including the freshman of the year is a huge accomplishment. I'm so proud of all those guys."

Sewell, a senior from Conroe, earns honors after leading the WAC in stroke average throughout the season, finishing with a 71.3 average through 29 rounds. In 10 events, he was top-10 in six of them, earning a top-5 finish four times and posting one tournament win at the Bentwater Intercollegiate.

Chaikangwal, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, was named WAC Freshman of the Year after posting a 72.8 stroke average in 17 rounds. The leader after day one of the WAC Championship with a three-under-par 69, he earned a pair of top-10 finishes in six events played and seven of his 17 rounds were at or below par.

Gray, a freshman from San Antonio, also earns first team honors this season in his first year with the Bearkats. He was the individual medalist at The All-American and finished third at the WAC Championship. He was par or better 10 times in 25 rounds this year, with a low round of 68 at the WAC Championship.

Blunt, a junior from Kingwood, recorded three top 10s this season with a 6^th place finish as his best at the season opening K-State Wildcat Invitational. He shot par or better 12 times and had a low round of 69.

German, a freshman from Mabank, had a pair of top 10 finishes this season taking 10^th at the Bentwater Intercollegiate and a season best 4^th-place finish at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic. He finished 24^th at the WAC Championships. He finished the year with a 73.22 stroke average and recorded nine rounds of par or better.
