Kats sweep DH against Lamar

BEAUMONT — The Sam Houston softball team held Lamar to just one run in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep Friday at LU Softball Complex.

The Bearkats won game one 2-1 and run-ruled the Cardinals 8-0 in the second contest to improve to 14-38 overall and 8-16 in WAC play.

Sam Houston got on the board right out of the gate. Kyndal Kutac hit a two-out single and came around to score when Kylie Hobbs ripped a triple into right center field.

The Bearkats scored again in the third inning after Kutac reached on an infield single to short. Brailey Wasik brought her home with a long single off the wall in left field.

That was all starter Regan Dunn needed. She tossed six shutout innings with four strikeouts before giving up a run in the seventh.

Mika Vento picked up the save, her third of the season.

Like game one, Sam Houston was the first to strike in the nightcap.

Wasik drew a lead-off walk and scored when Ellie Grill laced a single into right center field. Schaeffer followed with a single to left to make it 2-0.

The Bearkats broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning.

Emily Telg led off the frame with a walk and moved to second when Sheridan Fisher poked a single into right field. Kutac made it 3-0 with an RBI single, and Hobbs blasted a two-run double down the left field line.

Grill was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and Schaeffer pushed a single through the left side. Telg dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, and Fisher made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Brodie Quinlan and Kutac hit back-to-back RBI singles to help Sam Houston win via the run-rule.

Vento tossed five scoreless innings, holding the Cardinals to only four hits while striking out six to earn her fifth win of the season.

The teams will close the regular season with a single game Saturday at noon.
