New Bearkat to play at U.S. Amateur

HUNTSVILLE - Daniel Moon, an incoming freshman on the Sam Houston men's golf team, will play in the U.S. Amateur Championships beginning Monday.

The tournament will be played at the Ridgewood Country Club and the Arcola Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey Monday through Aug. 21.

Moon is set to tee off at 12:39 p.m. CST on hole No. 1 at Arcola. He will be playing with fellow Americans Kai Hirayama and Gunner Broin.

Moon signed with the Bearkats in November after a stellar high school career at Temple where he placed ninth with a 141 over 36 holes at the 2022 6A State Championships. He won the 2021 Legends Junior Tour Spring Preview with rounds of 70-69.

He also won the 2020 LJT Alamo Shootout with rounds of 68-75. and shot 147 at the 2021 6A Region II to finish runner-up and qualify for the 2021 State High School Championship

Moon had a strong 2020 season taking ninth at the All-State Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial with rounds of 75-74, fourth at the LJT Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship firing 75-68, third at the AJGA Stan Utley and Mid-America Youth Golf Foundation Junior All-Star with rounds of 69-73 and third at the STPGA - Fredericksburg Open firing 68-71.
