HUNTSVILLE – The Houston Cougars got a goal late in the first half and then early on in the second half and held on for a 2-1 win over Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.
The Kats (0-3) were in the home debut of first-year head coach
Sonia Curvelo nearly dug their way out of the 2-0 hole, getting on the board in the 68th minute on a successful penalty kick from graduate transfer
Kailey Pena.
Pena and
Erika Wilson both got shots off in the following minutes, but neither was able to find the back of the net.
Meanwhile, Houston (2-1) had not gotten many good looks of their own in the first half, but were able to take advantage of a scrum in front of the net when Madison Dichiara headed one in from close range in the 42nd minute.
It did not take long after the halftime horn for UH to add on when Janna Singleton connected from just inside the box less than 90 seconds into the second period.
The Kats will be back in action next on Sunday, September 4 when they host Houston Baptist.
