Kats drop road game at NM State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A scoring drought by Sam Houston in the second quarter allowed New Mexico State to pull away for a 69-48 victory Thursday evening.

The Bearkats never really got going offensively, shooting just 24 percent for the game and 18 percent from behind the arc to fall to 2-2 in WAC play and 6-8 overall. The Aggies moved to 4-1 in league action and 9-8 on the season.

NM State jumped out to a seven-point lead in the first quarter, but Chyna Allen hit a pair of free throws at the end of the period to cut the lead to 15-11. Adriana Djokovic made it a three-point game at 17-14 with a 3 at the 9:08 mark of the second quarter, but the Bearkats went cold from there.

The Aggies answered with a 15-0 run as Sam Houston failed to score for seven minutes to grab a 32-14 advantage. Allen finally ended the drought with two-minutes to go in the first half, but the Bearkats were never able to recover.

Madelyn Batista led SHSU with 14 points and Allen scored 13. Sydnee Kemp, Kaylee Jefferson, Mikayla Woods, Raanee Smith and Shanti Henry also scored in the game.

Sam Houston will travel to Utah to play Southern Utah on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
