HARAHAN, La. — The Sam Houston moved up the leaderboard to advance to the championship bracket of the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane on Saturday.
Â
The Bearkats went 4-1 again to finish day two 8-2 with 9,821 total pins which moved them into third place. North Carolina A&T will enter the championship bracket as the top seed with 10,514 pins, Louisiana Tech is second at 10,332 and Oklahoma Christian is fourth at 9,790.
Â
"The first two sets were very solid, and it got us moving in the right direction. The fresh treated us very well which was a must today," head coach Brad Hagen. "Later in the day the lanes got swirly on us because of who we were crossing with, and we were fighting ourselves to make quality shots which didn't help the situation. Â
Â
These are the mental things that we need to overcome sooner than later and learn to manage collectively.Â
Â
Rachel Ong finished the individual portion in eighth place with 1,058 pins for an average of 211.60. Her best game was a 240 in a 916-912 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.
Â
Alexia Cassman just missed out on a top 15 finish by placing 17th with an average of 202.20. Kaia Gray had 195.80 average and rolled a 231 in a 1,033-886 victory over Florida A&M.
Â
The Bearkats also defeated Texas Southern 967-897 and their lone loss was by 11 pins to Tulane.
Â
"The best part of today is we went through some adversity in the middle of the day and it's really important that we learn to battle through those moments," Hagen added. "Four more wins are important to our weekend; we're learning every day and we've seeded ourselves in a position to win the event which is all you can ask for."

Sam Houston will face Oklahoma Christian on Sunday.
