WACO — A singles victory for one of Sam Houston's freshman newcomers over a player from last season's NCAA championships quarterfinalist Texas Longhorns squad highlighted action for the Bearkat women's tennis team at the ITA Division I Women's Texas Regional Championships hosted by Baylor Thursday through Saturday. 

SHSU newcomer India Fenieys from Samaran, France, defeated the Longhorn's Maddy MacNeille 5-7 6-1 6-3 in the opening round of the event. The fall tournament annually features a field of 20 Texas NCAA Division I tennis programs whose players compete to advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national competition. 

The ITA Regionals mark the second of four tournaments on the squad's 2023 fall schedule. Next up is the annual Sam Houston Bearkat Invitational Friday through Sunday Oct. 27-29 in Huntsville. The Kats will play host to UTSA, Northwestern State and Lamar in the annual event at the McAdams Tennis Center. The tournament features a flighted tournament with individual championships for number one through six singles and one through three doubles. 

The semester's tournament slate will end with the Rajun' Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La. Nov. 3-5. Dual match competition begins during the spring semester.
