Seniors reach singles finals at Lamar

BEAUMONT — Bearkat seniors Paula Cerda and Sahithi Vutukuru both reached the finals of their respective flights to highlight action for the Sam Houston women's tennis team in their opening tournament of the 2023-24 season hosted by Lamar University.

Cerda defeated Aleksandra Zlatarova from UTSA 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4) in Saturday's opening round of the number one singles flight. Vutukura out-lasted Ana Veroux of A&M-Corpus Christi 11-9 in a tiebreaker after splitting sets 6-2 3-6 in the number two flight.

Freshman Roberta Sechi paired with Cerda for a 6-1 number two doubles 6-1 win over Megan Do and Leah Kuruvilla of Lamar. Sophomore Vianne Schwab posted a 5-7 6-3 1-0 (10-8) victory over Martina Vergara of Lamar in the number six singles consolation match-up Sunday.

Schwab and and fellow sophomore Linn Svaerd defeated Nouray Mentwally and Marika Mueller of Lamar in the number two doubles consolation round.

Next up for the Kats is action in the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation Regionals hosted by Baylor University Oct. 14-15. The annual Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville October 27-29 and the Ragin' Cajun Invitational at Lafayette, La. November 3-5 will compete fall competition for the SHSU women's tennis squad.
