HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston baseball team and head coach Jay Sirianni unveiled its 2024 schedule on Friday, a challenging slate as the program enters its first season in Conference USA.Â
"We have always prided ourselves of playing an extremely challenging schedule every year, and this one is no different," Sam Houston head coach Jay Sirianni said. "Coach (Shane) Wedd did an incredible job of piecing this together to give us a competitive and balanced set of games, which is only going to prepare us for what we are going to face as we move into Conference USA this season."Â
Season-ticket renewals are immediately available for the 2024 season by visiting GoBearkats.com/tickets or by calling the Bearkat Ticket Office at 936-294-1729.Â
The 56-game schedule includes 30 games at Don Sanders Stadium, including SHSU hosting perennial national power Oklahoma State for a three-game set to open the year, February 16-18. The Kats and Cowboys had been scheduled to open the 2021 season in Huntsville before the series was canceled due to the freak winter storm that swept through Texas that February.Â
Sam Houston will also host a pair of visitors from the northeast for weekend home series when they bring in Dartmouth (Feb 23-25) and St. John's (March 1-3). Additionally, the Kats will host five other midweek home games vs HCU (Feb 27), Baylor (March 19), Northwestern State (Feb 20), Rice (March. 26) and Houston (April 9).Â
The Kats will renew an old rivalry with Texas State when they travel to San Marcos for three games from February 8-10, the first series vs the Bobcats since 2012. Games vs the Bobcats will serve as the final non-conference series before the squad travels to NM State to open Conference USA play on February 15 on the Aggies' home turf.Â
Sam Houston will return The Don for its first home series within Conference USA when it hosts Dallas Baptist, starting February 22, and immediately head to Liberty the following weekend for a key series with the Flames. Â
From there the Kats will mix in non-conference and Conference USA series on the weekends the rest of the way, making a non-conference trip to Albuquerque to battle New Mexico for three games (April 5-7) and hosting former assistant coach Fuller Smith and Tarleton beginning May 3.Â
Other home league series include WKU (April 12-14), Middle Tennessee (April 19-21) and the season finale vs Jax State (16-18). The Kats will also make road trips to Louisiana Tech (April 26-28) and FIU (May 10-12).Â
Sam Houston will close out its annual Don Sanders Cup set vs Houston on May 14 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, the final midweek game of the year. Â
The Conference USA Tournament is scheduled for May 22-26 at JC Love Field in Ruston, La.
