Kats open play at Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, Del. — The Sam Houston bowling team is in a position to move up following day one at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic on Friday.

The Bearkats are currently in fifth place with 5,328 total pins after going 4-1 in the baker matches. Jacksonville State is in first place at 5,920 followed by Youngstown State (5,718), Vanderbilt (5,546) and Delaware State (5,336).

Sam Houston bounced back from a loss to Mount St. Mary's in the opener by knocking off Merrimack 1,063-969 and host Eastern Shore 989-962. The Kats disposed of North Carolina A&T 1,140-909 and Duquesne 1,091-1,053.

"The scoring pace is very friendly to the field and overall we did a solid job of anticipating the lanes opening up," head coach Brad Hagen said. "With the scoring being the highest we've seen thus far every shot counts more and more. We need to get out of the gates cleaner but overall it was a very consistent day. Tomorrow we need to take what we've learned and continue to apply it as we're learning the characteristics of the center as we go."

The teams will play traditional competition Saturday with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday at Millsboro Lanes.
