LUBBOCK — Sam Houston will be back in action following a brief break from the holidays when it takes on Texas Tech on Thursday at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Bearkats (6-7) have lost two straight heading into the contest which will be aired on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. The Red Raiders (9-2) are riding a four-game winning streak with wins over Omaha, Oral Roberts, Vanderbilt and UT Arlington.
This is the ninth time Sam Houston and Texas Tech have met on the court. The Red Raiders easily won the last meeting 84-52 on Nov. 27, 2020. The
Kats last defeated
theTexas Tech 56-54 in the first and only meeting in Huntsville on Nov. 14, 2007.
Sam Houston fell in its road match against Grand Canyon 76-64 at Global Credit Union Arena in Phoenix, Arizona on Dec. 20 before the holiday break. It was a slow start for the
Bearkats, who trailed 14-4 early in the game. However the
Kats made timely 3-pointers as well as an 8-2 run at the end of the half to remain within striking distance of the Lopes.In the second half, Sam Houston managed to bring the game within two points thanks to a
Damon Nicholas Jr. old-fashion three-point play, however that would be the closest the
Kats would get.
Sam Houston committed 12 second-half turnovers that led to 15 points for the Lopes and gave up a 17-4 run late in the game that ultimately sunk the
Kats' chances of a comeback.
Davon Barnes led the
Bearkats in scoring with 11 points,
Lamar Wilkerson was in double figures with 10, and Nicholas had nine points off the bench.
Souleymayne Doumbia had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points.
