HUNTSVILLE — With one swing of the bat
Lane Brewster turned Sam Houston's opening day into a success with a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island at Don Sanders Stadium on Friday night.
Down 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Jake Tatom reached on an error with one out. Brewster stepped to the plate and launched an offering from Rams reliever Jon Morrison deep into the night over the wall in right center field to put the Bearkats on top for good.
Chandler David got the win in relief, and
Braden Davis tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Sam Houston struck first right out of the gate when Brewster led off the first inning with an infield single to the pitcher.
Tyler Davis followed with a single through the right side, and Brewster came around to score on a WP.
The Rams took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Rob Butler off starter Cole Atkinson. Atkinson bounced back with a scoreless inning in the fifth to as he allowed only four hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Chandler David came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings to set up Brewster's heroics.
Game two of the three-game series is Saturday at 3 p.m. with the finale set for Sunday at noon.
