
Kats place 5th at Mid Winter Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. — Sam Houston closed out the Mid Winter Classic with a fifth-place finish at the Jonesboro Bowling Center on Sunday.

The Bearkats dropped their first match to Arkansas State, which won the first game with a perfect 300, 4-1. Sam Houston then lost to Nebraska 4-0 but finished the tournament on a high note with a 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

"Today was another solid scoring day despite the losses. We're so close to being where we need to be which is a positive," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We had a very high scoring tournament this weekend which was the opposite of the last and we mostly kept up. We just need stay focused, stay the course and know that we're making positive strides. Â

"Everyone is contributing in different ways which is important and ending a weekend with a rivalry win helps the mentality."

McKendree won the tournament by defeating Louisiana Tech in the championship match. Nebraska was third and Arkansas State finished fourth.

Sam Houston finished with 14,013 total pins which was second only to Louisiana Tech which had 14,086. McKendree had 12,878 pins but received a bye to the finals after winning its first match in the championship bracket.
