Kats go 1-1 on final day of tourney

HOUSTON — The Sam Houston softball team earned a split on the final day of the Houston Tournament at the Cougar Softball Complex on Sunday.

The Bearkats (5-11) dropped a heart breaker in extra innings against the Cougars but bounced back in the finale to cage Houston Christian.

Sam Houston will host Prairie View on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bearkat Softball Complex.

Houston 7, Sam Houston 6 (10 inn.)
The Bearkats plated four runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, but the Cougars were able to squeak out a 7-6 victory.

Sam Houston was down 6-2 when Ellie Grill, who had two hits, drew a lead-off walk and moved the second on a wild pitch to begin the seventh. Tricia Yarotsky and Elia Hebel, who had two hits, then walked to load the bases with no outs.

Brodie Quinlan then laced a single up the middle, one of her two hits, to drive in a pair of runs. Julia Herzinger made it 6-5 with an RBI single, and pinch runner Chandler Talbot scored on a passed ball to tie it.

Daryn Grams pitched nine innings in relief and gave the Bearkats a chance by allowing only two runs after Houston scored four in the first. The Cougars just got the timely hit they needed to walk off in the 10th.

Hebel had an RBI single in the first and drove in another run with a groundout in the third.

Sam Houston 9, Houston Christian 4
The Bearkats bounced back in a big way, erupting for five runs in the second inning to close out the Houston Tournament with a win over Houston Christian.

Julia Herzinger walked to begin the frame, and Jordan Peno singled to left field and both runners advanced on a throwing error. Chandler Talbot brought in a run on a fielder's choice and Emily Telg hit an RBI single to right.

Ellie Grill got on thanks to a fielding error that brought home Kelsey Bunch, who had drawn a walk to load the bases earlier. Tricia Yarotsky drove in a run with a single, and Brodie Quinlan's groundout made it 5-0.

Sam Houston got a three-run home run from Quinlan in the fourth, and Bunch hit a solo shot in the fifth.

Mika Vento got the win in relief. She went 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
