ARLINGTON — Sam Houston could not overcome an 18-point deficit in the first half to fall 70-58 to UT Arlington at the College Park Center on Saturday.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bearkats who dropped to 17-6 overall and 7-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks improved to 8-15 and 3-7.
Cameron Huefner scored 15 points to lead Sam Houston.
Lamar Wilkerson added 12 points as the Kats shot just 32 percent from the field.
Sam Houston got off to a quick start then things started to unravel. The Mavericks used an 8-0 run to take a 46-28 lead at the break.
The Bearkats made a run in the second half to get back in the game.
Kaosi Ezeagu scored on a layup to cut the lead to single digits at 60-51 with 7:29 left. After a three-minute scoring drought by both teams, UTA pushed the lead back to 10 but Wilkerson drained a 3-pointer to make it 61-54.
Qua Grant followed with a pair of free throws to pull within three, but the Bearkats never got any closer as the Mavericks sealed the game at the free throw line.
