HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston used the long ball to clinch its Western Athletic Conference opening series with a 12-2 victory over Seattle U in seven innings on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats (8-8 overall, 2-0 WAC) hit four home runs as part of a five-run third inning, including back-to-back-to-back shots to take control of the contest with a 7-0 lead.
Walker Janek got it started with a one-out blast to left center, then Clayton Chadwich ripped a two-run shot to bring in
Justin Wishkoski, who singled.
Tyler Davis, who launched a solo shot to lead off the second inning, connected on his second home run of the day to make it 6-0.
Easton Loyd capped the inning with a solo home run to right.
Steven Beard was solid on the mound for Sam Houston he went the distance allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Bearkats other runs came on a RBI single by Wishkoski in the first, an RBI triple by Loyd in fifth and RBI singles by Chadwick and Davis in the sixth.
Joe Redfield walked it off with a solo home run in the seventh.
Sam Houston will go for the series sweep Sunday at noon.
