PHOENIX, Ariz. — Tyler Davis came up clutch with an RBI single in the 12th inning to lead Sam Houston to a 12-11 victory over No. 25 Grand Canyon on Saturday night.
The Bearkats (14-10, 7-1 WAC) evened the three-game series with the rubber match scheduled to take place Sunday at 2 p.m.
Sam Houston trailed 6-3 heading into the sixth inning when it started to get going at the plate.
Clayton Chadwick walked and scored when
Walker Janek doubled down the left field line.
Myles Jefferson tied the game when he blasted a two-run home run with two outs.
The Bearkats appeared to take control of the game in the seventh when
Joe Redfield, Davis and Janek hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Justin Wishkoski hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run,
Carlos Contreras added an RBI single and Jefferson put Sam Houston up 10-6 with a two-run single up the middle.
The Antelopes weren't done yet. Two costly errors allowed GCU to tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.
The Kats looked like they would end it in extra innings when Davis singled in a run in the top of the 10th after
Lane Brewster led off with a triple. The Lopes were able to tie it again on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Brewster got things rolling in the 12th when he drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt and took third on a fly out by Redfield. Davis then laced a single into left field, and
Braden Davis capped a four inning relief appearance with a no-hit 12th frame to earn the victory.
