ST. GEORGE, Utah — Sam Houston began to rally in the ninth but came up short in a 7-5 loss at Utah Tech to begin a three-game Western Athletic Conference series on Friday.
The Bearkats (20-15 overall, 12-4 WAC) trailed 7-3 heading into the ninth inning after falling in an early hole by giving up four runs in the first.
Carlos Contreras laced a single down the third baseline with one out to get things cooking. Myles Jefferson then reached on a fielding error, and Jake Tatom walked to load the bases with two-outs.
Clayton Chadwick walked to drive in a run, and Justin Wishkoski reached on a throwing error to cut the lead to 7-5. Joe Redfield, one of Sam Houston's hottest hitters, grounded out to first base to end it.
The Bearkats other two runs came in the fifth inning when Jefferson scored on a double by Easton Loyd to left field. Tatom advanced the runner with a fly ball down the right field line, and Chadwick made it 5-2 when he brought Loyd home with a groundout.
Sam Houston will try to even the series Saturday with a single game at 3 p.m.
