HUNTSVILLE — Baylor outlasted Sam Houston in a see-saw slugfest to come away with a 7-6 victory at Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday.
The Bearkats (22-16) led 6-5 heading into the eighth inning after both teams kept trading the lead back and forth.
The Bears were able to scratch across a pair of runs on a double and a single to take the lead for good. Sam Houston went three up and three down in the eighth and ninth innings to seal it.
Baylor took the early lead with a solo home run in the top of the first. The Bearkats matched when Myles Jefferson got caught stealing in the second, and Jake Tatom, who led off with a single, was able to come home on the throw.
The Kats took their first lead with a run in the third as Justin Wishkoski, Joe Redfield and Tyler Davis all singled to begin the frame. Walker Janek made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly, but Sam Houston couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position and less than two outs.
The Bearkats went ahead with two runs in the fifth only to see the Bearkats quickly erase the advantage in the bottom of the inning. Redfield led off with a single came around to score on a triple by Tyler Davis who scored on a groundout off the bat of Janek.
Baylor went up 5-4 with two more runs in the sixth. Sam Houston answered with RBI singles by Clayton Chadwich in the bottom of the sixth and by Jefferson in the seventh.
Sam Houston will return to Western Athletic Conference play when Utah Valley comes to town for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
