Kats succumb to early deficit in loss

The Wolverines evened the Western Athletic Conference series with the Bearkats (23-17 overall, 15-5 WAC) after Sam Houston won the opener 3-1 on Friday. The two teams will play the rubber match Sunday at 11 a.m. after the game time was moved up to accommodate the Wolverines' travel plans and get ahead of inclement weather expected in the Huntsville area.
Utah Valley got to Bearkat starter Steven Beard (4-3) for five runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Wolverines added four more in the third off reliever Logan Hewitt.
Sam Houston finally answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 9-2. Walker Janek and Myles Jefferson both hit RBI singles only to see Utah Valley get a run back in the fourth.
The Kats were able to answer in the bottom of the inning when Justin Wishkoski, who went 4 for 5 on the day, hit a single to right field that allowed Clayton Chadwick, who walked, to move to third. Joe Redfield followed with a sacrifice fly to right, but the Wolverines blew the game open with five more runs in the fifth.
Sam Houston scored six unanswered runs thanks to a two-run double and RBI single by Chadwick, a groundout by Easton Loyd and two wild pitches. It just wasn't enough to crawl out of the hole.
