FORT WORTH — Sam Houston first baseman Tyler Davis has been added to the Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award midseason watch list, the organization announced Tuesday.
Â
Davis is one of eight players added to the list for the BBNCSA which is awarded to a Division I player based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity.
Â
"We are very excited about the midseason additions to the Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List this season," said Tracy Taylor, Executive Director of the Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award. "These student-athletes are the best group of hitters that we have ever added at midseason. These players are peppered throughout the leadership of most offensive categories of Division I baseball. Â
Â
"But that is only part of the story with these young men. They have received multiple academic awards and several carry GPAs of 3.6 or higher. One of our midseason additions has already received his business degree and is working on his graduate degree.
Â
Davis leads the Bearkats with a .437 batting average and has 16 extra base hits including 12 doubles, a triple and a home run. He is tied for second on the team with 34 RBI and has an on-base percentage of .506.
Â
The BBNCSA Watch List is now up to 59 hitters for the 2023 season. The BBNCSA will name the finalists for this year's award in May. The winner of the Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall.
The BBNCSA originally started out in 2017 as an honor going to the top college hitter in Texas. In 2019, the BBNCSA expanded becoming a regional award covering Division I programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The BBNCSA became a national award in 2020; however, no winner was announced due to the COVID-19 virus which cut the 2020 college baseball season short.
Â
Texas Tech's Hunter Hargrove won the initial BBNCSA in 2017. Dallas Baptist's Devlin Granberg took home the honor in 2018 with Texas Tech's Josh Jung winning the award in 2019. Connor Norby from East Carolina University won the BBNCSA in 2021. Last year's winner was Ivan Melendez from the University of Texas.
