ARLINGTON — The Sam Houston women's tennis team almost upset No. 1-seeded UT Arlington in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday.
The Bearkats (5-13 overall) lost to the Mavericks 4-2 in the dual match at the Arlington Tennis Center.
Sam Houston jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point.
Anastasia Khokhlova and
Aaliyah Hohmann gave the Kats the early advantage by knocking off Liz Cileno and Sarina Reinertsen 6-3 on the second court. After UTA won No. 2 doubles,
Paula Cerda and
Sahithi Vutukuru secured the point with a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez at No. 1.
The Mavericks won at No. 3 singles and at No. 6 to take the lead. Cerda buckled down and tied the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Chileno at on the first court.
Vianne Schwab almost extended the match but fell in a close No. 4 singles battle 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 to Bruna Casasampere after UTA took a 3-2 lead.
