LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Sam Houston avoided a series sweep with a 7-4 victory over New Mexico State at the NM State Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Bearkats improved to 15-26 overall and 6-6 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Daryn Grams threw all seven innings in the circle to earn the victory and moved to 6-4 on the season.
Sam Houston scored two quick runs in the first inning.
Ellie Grill and
Jordan Peno walked, and
Elia Hebel singled to setup an RBI single by
Hannah Scheaffer.
Brodie Quinlan drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run.
The Aggies answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Kats had a big inning coming.
Sam Houston loaded the bases again to begin the fourth when
Emily Telg and
Tricia Yarotsky singled around a walk by
Ellie Grill. Hebel then ripped a three-run double down the left field line, and Quinlan made it 7-3 on an RBI groundout.
Grams pitched five consecutive scoreless innings before giving up a solo home run in the seventh.
The Bearkats will travel to San Marcos on Tuesday for a midweek game against Texas State at 6 p.m.
