Bearkats drop doubleheader against WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Sam Houston dropped both games of its doubleheader against Western Kentucky on Thursday evening at the WKU Softball Complex.

Western Kentucky 9, Sam Houston 1 (5 inn.)

The Hilltoppers (26-8, 10-4 Conference USA) took control early in the first inning with a solo home run from Jenna Blanton. Western Kentucky extended its lead in the second with a three-run home run by Annie White.

The Bearkats (24-17, 9-5 CUSA) got on the board in the third inning when Bella Perez delivered an RBI single to score Sophia Lundstrom. However, the Hilltoppers kept Sam Houston's offense in check and added to their lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run from Kennedy Stenson, along with additional runs off multiple singles.

The game ended in a run-rule decision, 9-1, after five innings.

Western Kentucky 6, Sam Houston 1 (7 inn.)

In the second game, Sam Houston struck first in the opening inning. Lundstrom scored on a Western Kentucky error to give the Bearkats an early 1-0 lead.

The game remained scoreless over the next two innings, with Kendall Daniel in the circle for Sam Houston.

Western Kentucky responded in the fourth inning, taking the lead on a two-run home run by Maci Masters. The Hilltoppers added insurance later in the game, including another home run from Masters, while holding the Bearkats scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Daniel pitched six innings and recorded four strikeouts in the loss.

Western Kentucky secured the series with the 6-1 victory.

The Bearkats will conclude the series against the Hilltoppers on Friday at 5 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
