HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston finished off a Western Athletic Conference series sweep of UT Arlington with a 13-3 victory in seven innings at Don Sanders Stadium on Sunday.
The Bearkats (32-20) remain in first place in WAC play at 21-6 and hold a one and a half game lead over Grand Canyon (33-19, 19-7) heading into the final three league games of the season next weekend. Sam Houston travels to Tarleton (24-24, 8-17), and the Antelopes host California Baptist (28-24, 15-12).
The Bearkats made a statement early with six runs in the first inning Sunday after UTA scored a run in the top of the frame without getting a hit.
Justin Wishkoski and
Tyler Davis hit back-to-back singles to get things rolling, and
Carlos Contreras walked to load the bases.
Walker Janek and
Jake Tatom both drove in runs with a pair of fielder's choices.
Myles Jefferson ripped a two-run single through the left side, and
Wes Folse made it 6-1 with a double down the right field line.
Janek added an RBI double in the second, and
Jake Tatom brought him home with a single. Tatom would later come around to score on a fielding error.
Davis struck again in the third when he laced a two-run double to center field to push the lead to 11-3.
The Kats would walk it off for the second day in a row as
Clayton Chadwick added an RBI double in the seventh, and
Easton Loyd hammered a sacrifice fly to center field to put the run rule into effect.
Sam Houston will play the rubber match of the Don Sander Cup against Houston at Constellation Field in Sugar Land on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
