STEPHENVILLE — Sam Houston had a chance to capture the WAC regular season championship on Saturday but came up short in a 6-4 loss to Tarleton at TSU Baseball Complex.
The Bearkats (33-22, 22-8 WAC) finished the season half a game behind Grand Canyon for the top seed in the WAC Tournament which will take place in Mesa, Arizona May 23-27.
The Texans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Sam Houston overcame the deficit in the top of the second when
Myles Jefferson and
Walker Janek both scored on a throwing error.
Tarleton retook the advantage with a run in the third and two runs in the fourth. The Texans made it 5-2 with an RBI single in the sixth.
The Kats made it a game again in the top of the seventh inning when Jefferson and
Joe Redfield drew a pair of walks.
Justin Wishkoski ripped a two-run double in the left-center field gap to pull Sam Houston within one.
The tying run was left on base in the top of the eighth, and Tarleton added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame as the Kats went down in order in the ninth to seal the win for the Texans.
