Bowling adds international standout

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen and the nationally ranked Bearkat bowling program is proud to announce its newest signee Rachel Ong.

The Singapore native is coming off her most successful summer of her career and looking to top it this summer with future events. This past season has seen Ong excel throughout and even competing against future teammate Ramita Sarntong of Thailand as they both have represented their countries respectfully at a very high level.Â
Â
Ong's most recent accomplishment came at the 21st MWA Asian Junior Tenpin Bowling Championships where she finished fifth in all events and won gold in the team event with her Singapore National Team. She is currently part of the Singapore Federation's Developmental Squad and has actively been in that pool since 2020.Â
Â
Additional, accomplishments include second place (U18) at the 7th National Youth Championships, first place in the team event at the National School Games Class A-Division, and a first-place team event again with in the National Age Group.

In 2021, Ong never finished less than third in any national event which included two first-place finishes and three third-place finishes.Â

"Rachel's excitement to join us and get to work will be a great asset as she gets acclimated to the program and university," Hagen said.

Ong is the second signee ever from Singapore, the 13th international bowler to join the Bearkat bowling program going in to its 14th seasons, and she will be the 17th to have represented their national team as a Bearkat.Â

"Her international and competitive experience over the last two summers will play key roles in her success as she gets use to the collegiate competition schedule," Hagen said. "Rachel's success, and work ethic makes her an excellent addition to this program's future and will add another great option on the left side of the lane."
Ong joins the nationally ranked bowling program from Anglo-Chinese Junior College which is an institution committed to an all-round education of the highest standards. At SHSU she plans on majoring and continuing her education in either marketing or mass communication.
