Kats drop series finale at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK — Sam Houston fell behind early and could not recover in a 10-8 loss to Texas Tech in the series finale at Rip Griffin Park on Sunday.

The Bearkats (29-20) found themselves in a bind after the Red Raiders (32-16) put up four runs in the first inning off starter Gavi Coldiron.

However, the Kats would answer back with three runs in the top of the second inning when Walker Janek hit his 10th home run of the season to get the rally started. Myles Jefferson added an RBI double and Joe Redfield drove in a run with a single to cut the lead to 4-3.

Carlos Contreras would then knot things up at 4-4 in the third inning with an RBI double of his own.
The Red Raiders then responded in the next half inning with two solo home runs to make it 6-4.

After Coldiron left after three innings, Texas Tech kept hitting and scored two more runs on reliever Rome Shubert to make it a four-run game.

The Bearkats then started to climb back after a Contreras fielder's choice brought in a run in the fifth, and Easton Loyd added an RBI single in the sixth to make it an 8-6 game.

Marshall Wales relived Shubert and was solid for two innings, allowing only a solo shot that gave Texas Tech a run back heading into the seventh inning.

The Kats would keep on fighting as Contreras would tack on his third RBI of the day. and Janek brought him around to score on a double in the seventh inning to make it a one-run game.

At the end of the duel, however, the Red Raiders were able to pull away to seal the series victory.
Sam Houston returns home this weekend to host UT Arlington in the final homestand of the season. The first game of the three-game WAC series is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
