WICHITA, Kan. — The Sam Houston bowling team opened the season in style with an impressive showing at the Mid-States Championship at West Acres Bowl on Sunday.

The Bearkats earned the third seed heading into the championship bracket. Sam Houston knocked off SCAD-Atlanta 201-144, 187-148, 157-219 and 193-151 to advance to the semifinals.

It did not take long for the Kats to dispose of Midland in the next round, cruising to a 3-0 victory in the best of five match. Sam Houston took it 202-172, 213-177 and 165-158.

That setup a showdown in the finals with Wichita State. After dropping the opening game 222-190, the Bearkats tied it 179-151 but lost the next two 195-176 and 195-186 as the Shockers claimed the title.

Denise Blankenzee was named to the All-Tournament team for her play on day one Saturday to help Sam Houston move on to the championship bracket.

The Bearkats will return to action next weekend at the Southern Queens tournament in Baton Rouge, La., Oct. 25-27.
