EL PASO – The Sam Houston women's tennis team closed its 2024 fall semester schedule with a strong performance at the UTEP Invitational at the El Paso Tennis Club this past weekend. The Bearkats closed the three-day event Sunday by winning in four of its five singles matches.

"I was satisfied with the overall performance of the team this weekend," Bearkat head coach Rob Hubbard said. "The first two days had their struggles as I feel the team was adjusting to playing at a higher altitude. By Sunday they were very much on top of their games as we dominated the final day of competition. We won four matches and went the distance in three sets in the only loss."

The Bearkats faced opponents from NM State and host UTEP Miners in the fall finale.  Sam Houston also participated in the Central Arkansas Invitational in Conway in September, the ITA Regionals at TCU and the Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville in October.

"With so many new faces on the squad this fall it was exciting to see how these young players have come together as a team," Hubbard said. "We've improved with every event. The ladies have shown that they want to compete."

Nayuma Subba and Adithi Venkata Krishnan got things started for the Kats with Friday singles victories. Subba defeated Carlotta Mencaglia from UTEP 6-4 7-6 (5) and Adithi Venkata Krishnan, SHSU won over Nadia Nemeth from NM State 6-4 3-6 6-4. Saturday Jacqueline Scnabel won a thrilled versus Whtney Moon from NM State 3-6 6-2 6-1.

The Kats closed out the weekend with four victories in five contests Sunday. Subba  topped Zuzanna Szcepanska from UTEP 3-6 6-2 6-3, Venkata Krishnan defeated Paloma Hennicaux from UTEP 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Jacqueline Schnabel also won a three-set thriller topping NM State's Nadia Nemeth 3-6 6-2 6-2

The Kats Sara Sadadinovic, SHSU earned a victory by default versus Dora Kurdi from NM State.

In doubles Christine Jevicky and Venkata Krishnan defeated Valeria Torres and Paloma Hennicaux from UTEP 7-6 on Friday.

Sam Houston will open its 2025 spring schedule January 18 with a home match versus the Rice Owls. The Bearkats look to host 12 home matches at the new Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center this spring.
