Kats split double header against SFA

NACOGDOCHES – The Sam Houston softball team went 1-1 in a Tuesday doubleheader against rival Stephen F. Austin at the SFA Softball Complex.

The Bearkats (3-6) won the first game 5-3 then saw the Lumberjacks rally in an 11-5 loss in the nightcap.

Daryn Grams would get the win in the first game, her first win of the season. In the second game, Mika Vento would be tabbed with the loss.

The scoring began early for the Kats, as a crucial error by SFA on a drive to center field by Tricia Yarotsky brought in three runs in the second inning for the Bearkats. The Lumberjacks then clawed themselves back into the game with two RBI singles to bring itself back within a point heading into the third inning.

The Kats would not be denied in game one however, as Elia Hebel and Allie Saville would drive in runs in the fifth and seventh innings to give the Bearkats a three-point lead with three outs to go.

It would not be an easy inning for Sam Houston however, as SFA got runners in scoring position early in the inning. After another RBI single by the Lumberjacks and the bases loaded, Abigail Young would come in clutch and strike out SFA to take game one.

The momentum was all in favor of the Bearkats heading into game two. Hannah Scheaffer would kick off the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, driving in a run with an RBI double. Saville would keep the Kats in front with a two-run double in the third inning. SFA however would drive in a run as well to keep themselves in striking distance.

Everything was still coming up roses for the Kats however, as Scheaffer and Saville would continue to be hot behind the bat. They each drove in runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively and placed the Kats ahead by four points heading into the bottom of the sixth.

That would be the last time that Sam Houston would lead however, as the Lumberjacks would use seven hits and bring in 10 runs to take game two away from the Bearkats.

Sam Houston will next take on Northwestern State at the Best on the Bayou Tournament on Feb. 23rd at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, Louisiana.
