
Kats just outside top 10 in NTCA poll

HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston has been ranked No. 11 in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association poll midway through the season, the organization announced on Thursday.
Jacksonville State is the unanimous No. 1 in the February polling. The Gamecocks, 67-10, steamrolled through three major tournaments with barely a blemish to hold onto its poll leadership. Jax State collected all 43 first-place votes after winning the Stormin' Blue and White Vegas Classic, the Northeast Classic and the Prairie View Invitational during the month of January.
The Bearkats placed 12th at the Northeast Classic and sixth at the Prairie View Invitational, including three wins against top 10 teams to close out the tournament.Â
Youngstown State continued its climb in the poll, rising from third to second on the basis of a third-place finish at Prairie View and placing fourth at the Northeast. Arkansas State had a consistent month and was among the bigger movers, jumping up the ladder from sixth into third. The Red Wolves were second at Prairie View and third at the Northeast.
North Carolina A&T rose from fifth to fourth, boosted by an impressive second-place finish at the 34-team Northeast Classic. The Aggies were seventh at Prairie View in their only other January action. Vanderbilt dropped from second to fifth. The Commodores were third in Vegas but turned in eighth-place finishes at both the Northeast Classic and Prairie View.
Nebraska, Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin, Duquesne and Maryville round out the top 10. Sam Houston is 11th, followed by Tulane, Mount St. Mary's, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Wisconsin-Whitewater hold down the 12 through 15 spots.
Newman, Oklahoma Christian, Merrimack, Sacred Heart and Valparaiso round out the top 20. Fairleigh Dickinson is 21st, trailed by Delaware State, McKendree, Central Missouri and Niagara complete the Top 25.
The Bearkats will compete in the Lewis Flyer Classic Friday through Sunday at the Strike N' Spare II in Lockport, Illinois.
