Kats make quick work of ACU

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team swept a doubleheader Friday against Abilene Christian at Bearkat Softball Complex in non-conference action.
Sam Houston scored 18 runs on 18 hits to improve to 8-9 on the season. The Wildcats dropped to 7-11 as the two teams prepare to close the series with a single game Saturday at noon.
Sam Houston 8, Abilene Christian 1
The second game saw the Bearkats break it open in the third inning after a pair of five-run innings in the opener.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a home run in the first, and nether two teams could muster anything for the next two frames until Sam Houston came to the plate in the third.
A two-run double by Tricia Yarotsky got the Kats in business, and an RBI single by Haleigh Carter flipped the score to a 3-1 Sam Houston advantage. Brodie Quinlan followed with an RBI double, and Elia Hebel laced a run-scoring single into left center.
Julia Herzinger drove in a run with a single to right, and Morgan Holliday slapped an RBI triple off the top of the wall in right center field before scoring a wild pitch to take an 8-1 lead.
Mika Vento settled into the circle following the first batter. She went the distance scattering four hits over seven innings to go along with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Ellie Grill's lead off solo home run to begin the first inning set the tone in a 10-1 five inning victory over Abilene Christian on Friday.
The Bearkats were just getting started as Haleigh Carter walked and Elia Hebel reached on a one-out double to set up a three-run blast by Julia Herzinger to make it 4-1. Grill would come back around to bat before the frame was over and brought in another run with a bases loaded walk.
Sam Houston put the finishing touches on the Wildcats with five more runs in the fourth.
Hannah Scheaffer ripped a two-run single to left field to push the lead to 7-0. Kylie Hobbs followed with a walk to load the bases, and Tricia Yarotsky finished off ACU with a three-run double down the left field line.
That was all the help freshman Amy Abke needed in the circle. She allowed just one run on two hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.
