Bowlers headed back to NCAA regionals

The Sam Houston bowling team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 11th year in a row, earning an at-large bid to this season's championship. The Bearkats were selected to the Arlington Regional and will begin play on April 5 at the International Training and Research Center when they face Louisiana Tech.Â
This is the 12th time in 14 years Sam Houston has qualified for the NCAA Championships. The Bearkats have only missed the NCAA postseason once, in 2012, the second year of the program. The 2020 Championship was canceled. The Kats won the 2014 NCAA Championship, knocking off Nebraska in the finals.Â
2024 will mark the fourth year the NCAA will use the expanded regional format going from 8 teams at one location to 18 spread over four different regional sites. It's the third straight season the Bearkats have been sent to the Arlington Regional. In 2021 all four regionals were played in Kansas City, Mo.Â
The Kats will be joined in Arlington by North Carolina A&T, the No. 4 overall seed in the tournament. Alabama State and Belmont Abbey will compete in a Single Elimination match on April 4 with the winner advancing to face NCA&T. The remainder of the bracket will be a double elimination format. The four regional winners will advance the the NCAA Finals April 12-13 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Michigan.Â

The Bearkats and La Tech are no strangers to facing each other in the regionals. This will be the fourth straight year they will face off in the postseason, and the third straight year the Kats have faced La Tech at the ITRC.

Sam Houston eliminated the Lady Techsters in 2021. La Tech eliminated the Bearkats in 2022, before Sam Houston returned the favor last season, knocking out the Lady Techsters. Â

Jacksonville State, which won the CUSA tournament, enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Pittsburgh Region with their automatic bid. Conference USA members Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Vanderbilt and Youngstown State also earned at-large bids to the 2024 National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship, with Arkansas State the No. 2 overall seed and Youngstown State the No. 3 seed.Â
