BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Sam Houston could not take advantage of runners on base in a 3-1 loss to Western Kentucky in game one of a three-game Conference USA series at WKU Softball Complex on Thursday.
The Kats (12-21) left six runners on base in the loss, which pushed Sam Houston's league record to 1-9. The Hilltoppers, meantime, scored two runs in the bottom of the second which proved to be enough to lock down the win.
The Bearkats got a run back in the fourth after falling behind 2-0 when they loaded the bases on singles by
Ellie Grill and
Tricia Yarotsky and a walk by
Julia Herzinger.
Brodie Quinlan followed with an RBI single through the left side to cut it to 2-1.
After the Hilltoppers got it back on a solo home run, Sam Houston had another golden opportunity to get on the board.
Hannah Scheaffer dropped a single into right field and
Allie Saville was hit by a pitch to put the game-tying runs on base. A sacrifice bunt by
Ellie Grill moved the runners over, but Western Kentucky was able to get a pair of outs to escape the threat.
The two teams will be back at it Friday for game two of the series at 6 p.m.
