BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Western Kentucky once again had Sam Houston's number in a 3-1 victory at WKU Softball Complex on Friday to secure a Conference USA series win.
The Bearkats (12-22, 1-10 CUSA) jumped on the Hilltoppers right out of the gate.
Elia Hebel smashed a solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 advantage.
WKU had an answer in the bottom of the frame, however. The Hilltoppers plated a pair of runs off starting pitcher
Mika Vento to go up for good at 2-1.
Western Kentucky added an insurance run in the fifth which looked like it may come into factor in the seventh when the Kats got two runners on when
Kinsey Hobbs singled, and
Ellie Grill walked. The Hilltoppers managed to get out of the jam to secure the victory.
Vento (2-8) was solid in her outing despite taking the loss. She went the distance and finished with five strikeouts.
The teams will play the series finale Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed online on ESPN+.
