RUSTON, La. — The Sam Houston softball rallied from two runs down only to see Louisiana Tech walk off with a 7-5 victory in the Conference USA opener Friday at Bundrick Field.
The Bearkats trailed 5-3 heading into the fifth inning when
Ellie Grill led off with a single to get Sam Houston cooking.
Morgan Holliday came through with an RBI single to trim the Bulldogs' lead to one, and
Elia Hebel tied it with a single up the middle.
Neither team could manage anything offensively in the sixth, and the Kats appeared like they were close to forcing extra innings with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk extended the frame then the Bulldogs secured the victory with a two-run home run.
Hannah Scheaffer gave Sam Houston the early lead with a two-run bomb in the second, and Hebel drove in her first run of the game with an RBI single in the third for a quick 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs managed a big inning in the fourth with five runs off starting pitcher
Daryn Grams to set up the last inning heroics.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
