Bearkats in lead after Day 1 of CUSA Championship

MAGNOLIA — The Sam Houston women's golf team felt right at home at High Meadow Ranch GC on Monday, jumping out to an early 1-shot lead over the rest of the field after Day 1 of the Conference USA Championship. Â
The Bearkats turned in a round of 286, two shots under par for the day and will open Tuesday's play one shot better than NM State and six shots ahead of third-place UTEP. Â
Grace Jin set the pace for Sam Houston with a 3-under par round of 69, carding six birdies for the day. She made the turn at –2 after a bogey-free front nine and got as low as –4 after back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11. Jin made up for a double bogey at the Par-5 13th with birdies at 14 and 16 before giving one back on 18 as well. Â
Her round has her one shot back of Round 1 leader Emma Bunch of NM State who carded a bogey-free round of 68 on her first 18 of the week.Â
Meanwhile, Jenn David and Jennifer Herbst each finished with even-par rounds of 72 to get in the clubhouse in a tie for fifth. David took advantage of the course's Par-5s with birdies on three of the four offered, while Herbst used an eagle at the Par-5 4th to anchor her round. Â
Viera Permata Rosada turned in the fourth scoring round for the Kats with a 73, while Amelia Guo played 1-under on her final six holes to finish with a round of 74. Â
The Bearkats are scheduled to tee off in Round 2 of the CUSA Championship on Tuesday beginning with Guo at 9:00 a.m.Â
Sam Houston will be paired with NM State and UTEP for the second round of the 54-hole championship.Â
